filming locale

Does anyone know the location of the train sequences? Would be interested if this might be the Durango/Silverton line in Colorado.....

Wherever it was, it was beautiful location filming.

Reminded me of my homeland of BC, particularly the Okanagan-Similkameen region.

odavids: Confirmed. The filming locale info for the movie indicates the railroad in Colorado as a shooting location.

"Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" and "Breakheart Pass" would be two other movies using the railway.

There are actually two tourist lines in operation that use parts of the old narrow gauge Denver & Rio Grande Western [D&RGW] in Colorado. One is the Durango & Silverton, the other is the Cumbres & Toltec. Just Google them up.

Settings were generally around Silverton, Colorado

RR is now called the Durango & Silverton. It is the old branch line of the Denver, Rio Grande and Western 3 foot narrow gauge line from Durango. The parlor car scenes were filmed using the Chico Animas private car owned by the RR.

Some of the RR scenes with the high cliff are on the 'high line' just north of Rockwood which is about 25 miles north of Silverton. the rest are alonog the Animas River that runs from Silverton to Durango.

The mill scene at the end is filmed at the Mayflower mill about 4 miles east of Silverton. The ore came down from the mountain side mine on the tramway shown as the 'escape route.' The mill is owned by the local historical society and tours are available.

The town scenes are in Silverton.

The barroom and stable scenes are probably shot on a backlot of the movie company, but the fade in to those scenes go past a tramway terminal in Howardsville which is about 5 miles east of Silverton.
