Question about the locomotive
The steam engine used to pull the train in the film, is it still around today?

shareYes, it is, and you can take a very impressive journey on it if you like.
It's the Durango & Silverton Railroad at http://www.durangotrain.com/
I don't know if the specific engine in the movie is still running, but they have a bunch of the same make/model, so it's exactly like being in the movie.
The smoke/soot/cinders is pretty wicked though, so don't stick your head out the window too much! And you'd never want to ride on a flatcar like the characters in the movie! Of course, even they moved inside eventually!
Easily the most impressive train journey in the United States.
The same engine (#476) is still running.

Filmed at the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad (Durango, Colorado) using Denver & Rio Grande Western K-28 Class 2-8-2 #476 which still operates in excursion service today. Railroad scenes were shot just north of Ah Wilderness Ranch, while nearby filming locations included Molas Lake, Red Mountain City, Silverton, and two mines north of Silverton -- Shenandoah-Dives Mine and Mayflower Mine.
