Hmmm..

I'm watching this now, saw it on the guide and expected the old one. I didn't even know this had been made over. The original is and forever will be the best (IMO) but this one isn't as bad as I thought it would be. It's quite funny.

It's okay. The first one has a better pace, the comedy hits harder, and in better step the only thing about this one I do like over the original is Godfrey's back story; seems more plausible and interesting than a broken heart; though, I do realize it was a culmination that built up and that was the final straw.

The first one actually has two versions (which I have), the American version cuts a scene or two where as the Canadian version has them in. Hard to find but I think worth it.

You find it more plausible and interesting that the "hero" of this "comedy" fought on the side of the Nazis in WWII? That scene made my jaw drop to the floor.

I have only seen this film once, it's been a long time since I last saw it, and do not remember too much about it. Either way: I prefer the William Powell version as stated. However, I think my point above is that it had a more clear backstory rather than the 1936 version. Whether I agreed or disagreed with it, at the time, I find irrelevant to that point.

Mfromthewood, thank you for your last two comments, that's exactly why I prefer this one over the original. I found Niven's version much more believable, and June's character as well.
