There seems to be very little background trivia about this gem

I love this film. One of the best and yet there is very little information about whatever became of the props like the mechanical mock-up of the creature. I`d like to know if any physical aspects of the creature still survive today or were destroyed long ago. The thing is still so damn scary! It almost makes you wonder if there is any scientific or paleontologic basis for the existence of giant prehistoric snails long ago.
