Question about Orson Wells (SPOILER WARNING)

(SPOILER WARNING)

When he found out his men went too far and murdered the ranch hand why didn't he immediately tell Jeff Chandler and turn his men over to him? He might have been guilty of appoving a beating which at that time few juries would convict him because of the time but he went too far when he had the old man killed and that made him an accessory to murder. It seems like he could have avoided much of his problems.

I think he was caught up in the obsession with control/power. his daughter lays some stuff on him about how he treated her mother, etc; which suggests he was only focused on the power structure set up by his grandfather and father. Orson clearly adds a ton of humanity, complexity, and sympathy to this character; which really does make us wonder why he didn't simply cooperate with the law. The scene at the end where his daughter puts his jacket on him is surprisingly touching. Nicely done performance!

Anyone know how much of this film was "manhandled" by Orson? Meaning, how much of the script did he alter to suit himself, and did he direct his own scenes as he was known to do? The film dangles so close to being another cookie cutter drama, that I have to wonder if Orson helped save it!
