Your favorite ending of all movies?

It may be mine. It's both so unexpected and life-affirming!

Terrible ending. By far the worst part of the film. It's totally unbelievable and dishonest to the characters. It's kind of sad even. Neither of them are in love with each other. He's found someone "safe" and she's found a man who is exciting with whom she is infatuated. They won't realistically live happily ever after. The golden moment of The Graduate, in its last shot, says everything that Wilder couldn't say here, ten years later.

Ed Norton is Tyler Durden and Rosebud is the sled.

Her father sums up what will happen when he tries to talk Gary Cooper out of going through with it. He says that Cooper's affairs usually last 2 weeks but that in this case since he thinks he is in love, the affair will last 4 weeks.

Cooper tries to control himself, but gives in to his romantic instincts. That doesn't mean they will live happily ever after.

I can understand her father wanting to protect her and keep her from getting hurt but sometimes that happens. It's part of growing up. The poor girl craved a romance and was in the midst of one. Who knows how long it would last but it's what she had been dreaming about and what she wanted. All love affairs don't last a lifetime. She was testing the waters and seemed to control how far things went.

If she was looking for marriage why would she go for a guy in her father's files? She knew all about him and still got caught up in it. She even started inventing a wild background story for herself; one that would rival his. If she didn't know what she was doing she really was a little naive twit.

Good point about the Graduate. It had that ending as Hepburn looked actually more horrified than anything when pulled on the train. If it just ended like that, then it's kind of similar to what the Graduate did. Instead, because of the times, they had to add the BS voiceover about how the two got married and lived happily ever after (which wouldn't be very long as Clark's health was already failing during the filming of the movie).

Did you notice that Gary Cooper had difficulty lifting Audrey up into the train at the end? It looked very awkward and a little challenging.

Maybe that's why daniel mile net said Audrey Hepburn looked horrified as Gary was lifting her up onto the train. Maybe she thought he was going to drop her!

I agree, I think it's a great ending. I had no idea what was about to happen. The voice over by the father was an after thought to avoid possible backlash from the church; to keep them from calling for a boycott of the movie. I liked it with the voice over and I would have liked it just as much without it.
