Delightful and Underrated!

What a great "comedy with music," as director George Cukor preferred to think of it! His fine sense of storytelling is evident in every scene.

I found a copy at the library and watched it at least once a day during the week-long check-out period. Gene Kelly is known to most musical aficienados for "Singing in the Rain" and "An American in Paris," but this film as well as "The Pirate" are, I think, just as worthy in terms of his acting and dancing performances. The "Why Am I So Gone About That Gal" number, for example, features Kelly's hilarious take on Brando's "Wild One" persona and, as the number progresses, morphs into a jazz choreography tour de force.

As for the "Ladies In Waiting," all are extraodinary. Kay Kendall is alternately foxy and vulnerable, Tania Elg both sultry and kittenish, and Mitzi Gaynor is terrific as the sensible, dependable one with--as it turns out--a considerable dash of moxie. Reviewing each of the four viewpoints and how they compare to the other three, not to mention jigsaw into the film as a whole, has been an interesting exercise!

If you're looking for a movie with a strong sense of wit and visual style, I highly recommend "Les Girls."
