Was there ever some kind of sequel to this?

I seem to remember a scene where the robot is in L.A. and the hero is lowered onto its head. He is there to insert a radioactive element, if memory serves me. However, it is a suicide mission and we see the hero die from radiation poisoning just as he inserts the element.
