I liked the way Chaplin poked fun at commercialism. How they used his character's mishap for the Whisky advertisement seemed to be Chaplin's way of stating the unsophistication of their methods.

"I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not".

And plastic surgery and television culture and ant-communist/socialist paranoia and nuclear threats are all still very strong and real in today's world. The surprising part to me is how soft and forgiving Chaplin's character is to all these things.
