Avoid the Polart DVD

The print or transfer is inadequate and you will be looking at a black screen most of the time. This makes it hard to follow.

Criterion is scheduled to release this, along with A Generation and Ashes and Diam onds, in the spring of 2005.

April 5th to be exact.

If you shop around you'll be able to get all three films for around $50.

Note: The above comments are exclusively my opinion.

So true,

Luckilly I only rented the Polart DVD. The VHS is in surprising better quality

reply

Well, I wish I'd seen this earlier.

reply

Ghastly, isn't it? Only time I've ever seen a DVD transfer so bad that it made it impossible to discern lots of crucial plot points. The Criterion, fortunately, is a dramatic improvement. I know the set is expensive, but all three movies are fantastic and well worth liquidating the piggy bank for.

LOL, all this time I just thought the movie sucked.

reply

me too. I couldnt figure what all the hoopla was, about watching a film where half of the screen is black and you are reading subtitles.

reply

Wow I just finished watching the Polart version five minutes ago. The sound quality was atrocious--I had my volume all the way up and it was still hard to hear. I guess this doesn't matter as much when you're reading subtitles, but still... Good movie though. I'll have to check out the Criteron version.

reply

Damn I wish I'd read this. Memo to self: there is a reason we pay the extra bucks for Criterion treatments.....
