A book kind of similar.....can't rememwbr the name...help?

There was a young adult novel I read in school that took place after the revolutionary war and dealt with a young man and his brother in law fighting in another conflict (I believe it dealt with fighting for the rights and earnings they were not given following the end of the revolutionary war...a second revolutionary war in a way). **spoiler** it ends the young antagonist on guard falls asleep as his comrades are asleep in a cellar and snow falls. It unfortunately suffocates his friends and they die in the cellar. I can't remember the name of this book, any ideas? Thanks
