Pretty Hard To Go Wrong With Jock Mahoney

Hey folks,

I just watched this film again for the second time in the past year. This is really a pretty simply story and not exactly a classic western, but it is still fun to watch Jock Mahoney do his work. While not exactly like Clint Walker, I do seem to have the same appreciation for them since they both seem to fill the screen with there size. I was a teenager when this film first came out, and I never saw it again until this year. It is a good story with a great actor.

Best wishes,
Dave Wile

Did you know Mahoney doubled Errol Flynn in the Adventures of Don Juan? Don Juan takes a flying leap down a huge staircase at the end of the movie, and supposedly Mahoney was the only stuntman crazy enough in Hollywood to do the stunt. I don't know if Dave Sharpe was unavailable to dougble Flynn.

Sharpe, by the way, was famous for his flying leaps in westerns and serials. In Touch of Evil he tackles Charlton Heston with one of his leaps in a bar fight, and somehow I didn't recognize him. Very long and distinguished career stretching from Hal Roach comedies to Blazing Saddles.

My wife and I both enjoyed this unassuming film. A very fine "B".

As happened often in the '50's, Joe Dakota was reworked for an episode of Wagon Train titled Alias Bill Hawks. I was watching that episode and asked myself 'why does this seem so familiar?'. Jock Mahoney, in my mind was not nearly appreciated enough.
