I actually liked it. . .

After hearing mixed reviews for years I finally decided to watch this film and was pleasantly surprised. So it was historically inaccurate and possibly a little over the top in a few places but it was still pretty good. The best scene of the entire movie was when Jeanne comes home very late from the press club and Sal follows her onto the beach. The cinematography and editing during this scene was awesome.

I think the greatest part of this movie by far is Jeff Chandler. Sal goes through such a character transformation in this story and Chandler played it so perfectly. I watched the last scene about five or six times.

Many criticisms I agree with, esp the historically incorrect one. BUT, in this story line she didn't really have time to really learn her craft and necessarily would have likely overacted in any case. Did you notice the "theatrical" quality her voice assumed as she moved up in the world. The main thing for me about this movie is that it's the ONLY thing that Kim Novak ever did that I have liked. Her "beauty" is so perfect that I find it quite UNinteresting!

I think Kim tried her best with a HORRIBLE script. It's simple - nobody talks the way the people in this film do.

And I agree about the scene on the beach. The shot where she's in silhouette, undressing in the moonlight, is gorgeous.

I agree w/ your post, Yarb40. I'm a big fan of Kim Novak, but I was completely fascinated by Jeff Chandler during this movie - his character was the best - he was funny, sexy, loving, and absolutely heartbreaking at the end. The character really went thru a lot and was much more interesting to me than Jeanne Eagles. I also agree, the most memorable part was the way the beach scene was shot - just beautiful!
