When I started watching the opening credits to Harry Belafonte singing the lovely title song.
Unfortunately, the movie was terrible. Fontaine was miscast, Belafonte annoyed me with his chip on the shoulder attitude. I didn't see any chemistry between Steven Boyd and Joan Collins.
Absurdity: A Statement or belief inconsistent with my opinion.
The story is all over the place. I get that human behavior is unpredictable, but the adults in this story were one-dimensional with race the only common bond. I guess that's what loyalty can do. Joss confused me the most. One minute she won't marry, then of course she will but won't hurt her mom by telling the dirty secret. I couldn't stop saying What?
If we can save humanity, we become the caretakers of the world
The movie had a great premise, setting and cast. I think the problem was the script, the timing, and the fact that the movie couldn't seem to decide whether it wanted to be an English upper-class melodrama, a murder mystery, or a message political film about self-government. Any of the three would have been good and given the film a direction, but by randomly transferring between the three we get this jumbled mess.
Nevertheless, the film is watchable if only for the gorgeous scenery which equals that of "South Pacific".
