She certainly didn't need to do the film. She was an Oscar winner. Hollywood royalty. Doing a film that suggested she was interested in having sex with a black man was career suicide. Shortly thereafter, she was relegated to roles in such dismal faire as voyage to the bottom of the sea. However, I've always thought she was breathtakingly beautiful in The Women. As it turns out, she stood for much more than that. Something I'll always hold in high regard.

I graduated from the college of the streets, I gotta Phd in how to make ends meet.

Good points. I'd be interested to hear more on her motivation. I read in the trivia section that she got hate mail for acting with a "n!&&@r". It is interesting that most of the letters used similar/identical wording and phrases, suggesting the comments all came from a common sources. Not much has changed with the reactionary, hateful racist crowd. Just reading comments on the internet today makes clear that that crowd has a very limited, unoriginal and tiresome store of comments, clearly derived from a common source.

i am confused because i thought her love interest in the film was white. so, what are they even talking about?

Don't confuse Joan FONTAINE (blonde) with Joan COLLINS (brunette). They were both in this film. Fontaine plays the woman with an interest in the Belafonte/Boyeur character. Collins plays the love interest for Stephen Boyd.

She was 40 by the time she made the film and her career, her film career was slowing since the early 1950s.

Too bad she isn't around today. A drop dead, gorgeous 40 year old woman !?! The day of the cougar has come ! I'd better clarify. She is not a 'mature' woman looking for a good time. She is truly in love with a man who is 'different' from her. I should be so lucky to meet someone like her.
