More wooden than iron...

...for a man torn between upholding the law and saving his son's life, Hayden played this with a remarkable degree of minimalist expressiveness. That, or he was just a lousy actor! The film has the feel and production values of a 50s TV series, but it grew on me as it went along, especially on the back of strong support from Constance Ford and John Dehner.

In the Goofs section, this is put forward as a plothole:

Once everyone figures out that the sheriff's son didn't kill the stage driver, they all agree that he couldn't have known the stage was even coming, yet this defense was never raised once during the trial that convicted him.

This confused me too, at first, but I think I have the solution. Until it was established that Walden held up the stagecoach shortly before the fatal robbery attempt, it wasn't evident that the killer must have been lying in ambush.
