Why was John Huston 'not fond' of this movie? - minor spoilers-

According to a Trivia entry for this movie "John Huston was not fond of the finished film, saying it had been impossible to make it under the Hays Code."

I'm a great fan of this movie as it is, and I'm not sure I wanted Sister Angela to renounce her vows for Mr. Allison. With that in mind does anybody know what in particular Huston disliked about the finished film? Was it the ending, or scenes earlier in the movie?

reply

Can't understand how he didn't like the finished film even better than African Queen.

I saw this movie with my mother when I was in my teens, and I loved it (I was a Catholic school kid, and I loved our nuns) I was happy to see Sr. Angela stick to her vocation, and to see Allison accept that and respect her. If the film were made these days, she would probably throw all of her principals aside, and take up with Allison.

I could be a morning person if morning happened at noon.

Well, I think the answer is in the trivia. He was disappointed with the fact that Sister Angela could only be made to love the man upstairs. :)

Huston may have been unhappy with this, but it was the best thing for this GREAT character-driven film.
