Powerful film, especially for it's time

This powerful film had an even more powerful last scene. Franciosa was a very under appreciated actor and was superb in
this great film. Great and perfectly fitted cast.

I agree, a powerful film-so unusual for its time-of course there are several other films dealing with a similar subject but one could probably count them on one hand. I never tire of seeing NY and Brooklyn in the fifties and forties. I happened to catch "On the Waterfront" yesterday so it's an Eva Marie Saint weekend-she was so beautiful and talented.

She still is, IMHO!

IMHO the best thing all the principle actors ever did. I had seen all in other films but was surprised after watching this for the first time that Murray was better if possible than his debut Bus Stop. Saint better than On the Waterfront, as well as the rest of the cast. It was an important film that approached all of its subject manner in an adult way that would even resonate today.

I just saw this movie, wow I bet some eyebrows were raised back then since they did not sugarcoat the addiction issue. Not to mention the slang use of the word "mother". I'm surprised that got past the censors. We all know what they meant.
