American actors working in Italy

Why did American actors make films in Italy in the 50s? Was it really for the money? I just can't imagine the actors getting paid more in Italy than they would in America.
And why get someone like Steve Cochran? As good as he is in this, he was never really a top international star that could justify being chosen over an Italian actor.
So many questions...

I have no idea about why the choose him, but the choice itself seemed to be the right one.

in betsy blairs case - it was probably the hollywood blacklisting that forced her to find work elsewhere

in steve cochran's instance - this film may have been just something to fill in a gap in his hollywood schedule - or a chance to play a more complex role than he was given in his hollywood B movies - he was certainly up to it - he did a terrific job

i may be reading more into it - but Steve seemed very happy to be with Betsy in their first scene together - he smiled like he never smiled again in the film - admittedly - the script didn't give him many chances to smile

Nobody on this thread seems to have noticed that IL GRIDO was an Italian/American coproduction which explains a couple of B-list (but excellent)American stars. Steve Cochran must be unique in having worked for Antonioni and Roger Corman.
