Her dance in the pub

I watched Funny Face, but the dance that stuck out to me, maybe even more because it's been used in that ubiquitous GAP commercial, but anyway, Audrey dances dressed in black, spandex possibly, with black slipper shoes (loafers?).
What style of dance is that? I really love it, she is a fantastic lovely dancer, it's inspiring me to dance ^_^

That is stage dancing from 50's London with a bit of Hollywood and ballet influence. She is only wearing spandex in her Capris, the turttleneck is cotton, and the shoes are ballerina flats from Ferragamo.

...for this former ballet pupil and chorine to do this dance in front of Fred Astaire. But she does it with such a sense of fun and enthusiam that you have to be impressed with her ability to throw away her inhibitions and express herself. It was great.

oh i lovvved that part...
and the part where fred astaire dances...he seemde so smooth...

when audrey danced, that's what made me love the movie sooo mcuh

I just watched this movie again last night and I could not get Michael Jackson out of my mind as I watched Audrey Heburn dancing in the cafe. The cropped black pants, the white socks, and loafers made me wonder if Michael Jackson was inspired by this look and this dance too.

reply

Audrey wanted to wear black socks during the jazz dance, but the director insisted that the socks be white to show off her footwork. It makes all the difference. I think Michael Jackson stole the white sock idea from this movie.

It's been said he was influenced by Fred Astaire, so its not so far fetched to that he might have been influenced by this scene as well

I don't know the name of the style but I do know I love that scene! It's so much fun especaially the last two thirds of the dance when it stops being all slinky! It was also great for a chance to see Audrey dance and put her ballet training to use. I'm always surprised that she wasn't in more musicals but I suppose it's because she didn't have the strongest singing voice.

reply

It's because of that scene that I love Funny Face.

I'd like to fly, but my wings have been so denied...

I am a Audrey fan but I don't like dancing in movies and I think this one is particularity goofy.

"I don't like dancing in movies."
Ok, so why did you watch FUNNY FACE, a musical? And why would you watch ANY musical?
"May I bone your kipper, Mademoiselle?"

reply

Very simple answer. I didn't know what the movie was before I watched it. I watched it once and never watched it again. I don't like movies with dancing and never watch them if I know ahead what they are. Singing is okay. I like "Two for the Road" still my favorite Audrey movie.

It reminded me a lot of French Apache dancing.

Astoundingly good! It's the kinda of thing that makes me ask myself .. Where did they FIND this girl??

reply

I didn't recognise it has any style of dance in particular. I just thought of it as a clever piece of choreography.
