Did Anyone Else Find It Funny When.....?

Fred Astaire's just going into that beatnik café to see Audrey do her dance, and there's a couple sitting outside and the man slaps the woman across the face and then suddenly they just start kissing again and Fred pulls this hilarious bewildered face?
First time watching this film we laughed for about 25 minutes straight at that bit

"I am big. It's the pictures that got small."

I just loved the general asides Fred Astaire did when he was mocking them all.

I loved that part too. And I noticed it straight away, laughed my head off. Then he says "Yep, this must be the place!" or something along those lines.

Why exactly did the woman kiss the man after he slapped her? I realize this was before women's liberation, but I think the beatniks were evolved enough to realize that a man's slap does not deserve affection. Of course, this was before Carole King and Gerry Goffin wrote "He Hit Me (It Felt Like a Kiss)."

reply

Maybe she was an empathicalist. When he slapped her, she suddenly felt his anger and therefore her impulse was to comfort him rather than kick him in the nuts.

I thought it was just a joke about French people's legendary "passion."

No doubt feminists hate this film.
