Tobonga

Is there really such a legend in the south seas about a spirit called a tobonga?? I swear I read something, probably in a book by some traveller about a native superstition where a spirit seeking vengence dwells in a tree. I recall it said that the natives can tell a tree is haunted because the spirits likeness appears in the tree. Maybe the writers weren't just making it up when they said there really is legend in the south seas about a tabonga. Has anybody heard this before?

True, fairies are said to dwell in trees. Also you might know of the "Green Man" that appears in English folklore. You man have seen old buildings with sculptures of a face surrounded by foliage. My aunt had a door knocker with a "Green Man" on it. Its said that this comes from people seeing patterns in foliage or on galls on the trunks of trees that resemble faces. I have taken several pictures of trees with simulacra that resembles faces. If I recall the "Green Man" protects a home from harm, hence the reason for the sculptures on homes and door knockers.

Then why did people put them over entrances to homes???

So when people put one over there home it was good "green man". by the way I read a review of a book on the subject of Green Men, but it was published in Great Britian, but I don't think you'll find in the states since few Americans are interested in English folklore.

I don't remember the title of the book. But it was reviewed several years ago in the British publication Fortean Times.
