Fear Strikes Out

Why didn't Anthony Perkins win an academy award for this movie?

reply

AMEN.

Why didn't he win an academy award for ANYTHING is the real question though.

reply

Yeah, he was really was talented. I saw Psycho and Fear Strikes Out and that made him one of my favorite actors. He's great. Fear Strikes Out is one of my all time favorites. I think the part when his acting is the best is in the one scene when he stands up to his father. What do you think?

"You don't care about me." "You never gave a damn."

Hi!

Now why don't more people (especially from the Anthony Perkins message board) post over here?? Fear Strikes Out, next to Psycho, I think is one of Perkins' key performances. Although this movie is a complete dog to try and track down. I've downloaded a few clips of it from various places on the internet, and watched some good scenes on one of his TV biographies, but regretfully I've never seen the film in its entirity. Although I don't need to see the whole thing to know that he is AMAZING in it. Every clip I have is astounding.

It's at the top of my video/DVD hitlist right now. Where did you get your copy (if you have one)?

Anyway, glad you got my message. I posted that so long ago not expecting anyone to ever read it but now it's paid off! :-)

What did you want to talk about?

reply

I got it on DVD at Best Buy. I think it came out last year. I made a special trip to Best Buy just to get it. I'm glad I did. You should definitely get it. It is such a great movie.

I posted my message a very long time ago. I didn't think anybody would respond so I never really looked until now. I'm glad I found somebody to talk to about this movie. I don't know anybody that's seen it.

Somebody once told me I look like Anthony Perkins. Should I take that as a compliment?

reply

Oh that's DEFINITELY a compliment! ;-D

Well hopefully I'll track it down on DVD soon and be able to have more in-depth conversations with you! One of the favourite clips I have is with Perkins and Karl Malden (also excellent) standing talking underneath the stalls -- "You don't want them to call you yellow!" The expression in Perkins' eyes is mesmerising, and the two of them together bring such depth and intensity to the dialogue. It really shows just how good they are. Apparently the director encouraged the actors to have a good friendship on set and build up a rapport, rather than getting them to hate eachother. That was a smart move.

I also loved the part when Perkins has the baseball bat and and is hitting the things around him yelling "Get away.... get away or I'll kill ya! I wanna play! I wanna play!!" before being dragged away.

I'm sure you can tell me plenty more about the highlights. What about his infamous breakdown scene? In the documentary I have, it only shows a very brief clip of him tearing around the pitch and then in cuts to him trying to climb up the fencing like a caged animal, yelling at his father. Superb. I can't wait to see the whole thing- I'm sure the build up to it was great.

Mother! Oh God, Mother!!

reply

Yeah, that breakdown scene is very powerful. Seeing that one clip is okay, but seeing all that leads to it is even better. Wait until you see the movie. It's great. I know you're gonna love it. Well, talk to you later Sweet Psycho Girl.

" You know what I think? I think that we're all in our private traps, clamped in them, and none of us can ever get out. We scratch and we claw, but only at the air, only at each other, and for all of it, we never budge an inch."

Sure!!! It is the Ultimate compliment.

reply

I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!! I own this and Psycho. Tony was great in this. I think he was one of the many underappreciated actors of movie history. He should have won for Psycho too. I love him

reply

Yeah, he was very underappreciated. I still don't understand why he didn't win for this or Psycho. Tony was a great actor.

Maybe it's just me, but a ton of films and performances from 1957 were terribly overlooked by the Academy Awards. Sweet Smell of Success, A Face in the Crowd, and this film weren't even nominated for Oscars. I was absolutely shocked that neither Anthony Perkins or Karl Malden were nominated for their riveting performances.

After seeing this film last night, I'm very interested in seeing more of Anthony Perkins. He obviously gave more great performances besides Norman Bates in Psycho.

"Dry your eyes baby, it's out of character."

reply

Yes I agree. This is one of his best.

reply

Excellent performances from Perkins & Malden. Undervalued film.

Because the academy awards members were psychos.
