What facts were distorted that made the REAL PIERSALL disown this movie?

I watched this on TCM last night and afterwards Robert Osborne and Carrie Fisher were discussing it. Carrie said something about Piersall not liking the movie because it made his father look worse than he was.

Thank you for responding FreshWater! I understand now...I have seen several movies that distort the parent figure for dramatic effect. I can understand why.

Thanks again!

Piersall said he didn't like a "fag" playing him.

:O How rude!!
But I guess people back then were judgemental back then towards gay and bi-sexual people no matter what they did or how good they were at things they did. I guess some people today can still be that way.

Piersall called his boss's wife a "broad" on the air. Suggested she shoud stay in the kitchen!

Yikes. I can understand the conservative sentiment back then, of course, but I wonder how Perkins felt when he heard Piersall say that about him.

"Piersall said he didn't like a "fag" playing him."

This comment is crass and uncouth. All articles I have read have claimed Piersall did not like how they portrayed his father and claiming certain scenes never happened are the reasons for disowning this movie. Nowhere that I can see shows Piersall of being homophobic.
