double standard?

After both Rock Hudson and Jennifer Jones flee to Switzerland, they take up residence at a local inn and share a room even though they are not married. There is a scene where the local doctor visits to check on her pregnancy. After he leaves, Hudson tells Jones that they should get married because "that is the right thing to do". How ironic since the child was conceived out of wedlock. Is this not a double standard?

I'm not sure I understand your question. Frederick wants to marry Catherine because it's the socially correct thing to do since they're expecting a child. In what way is this a double standard?

I'd like to kiss you, but I just washed my hair.

That's what men in those days were supposed to do, If they got a woman pregnant they were supposed to marry her to save her reputation and make the child legitimate (as illegitimate children had limited rights until the about 40 years ago)

WHAT are you talking about . . . in 1970? How were their right limited? You're talking about the 70's when this country was in the midst of a sexual revolution, peace and love, pot smoking, etc.
