Abrupt ending

I really got involved in this movie and only read the book later but really! We're expected to believe that Lt. Henry is madly, passionately in love with Catherine, yet when she and their baby die, he walks off into the sunset, leaving them to be disposed of by the hospital in some anonymous grave. He doesn't take care of arrangements or pay his last respects. Zilch, zip, nada, what a jerk.
