why so unappreciated??

yes, the first part is overly sentimental, definitely soppy. so sweet it was ennervgin, but I have to admit: since Henry goes back to duty in the disaster of Caporetto and then diserts, it becomes a new and more interesting movie.

the ending then is very very moving.

so in the end, I'd say: a movie that didn't let me cold.

what do you think?

I am a huge fan of this movie, always have been. The reviews when it first came out said it was more of a 1940's type movie. So in 2015 that doesn't matter when its watched now. I think Rock and Jennifer had great screen chemistry

Though not meant as such, it was really a compliment, since the bulk of 'forties movies were considerably better than 'fifties fare. The 1957 Farewell To Arms is a beautifully made, moving, and entertaining picture, one of the best of the era. Surprisingly it is much better than 1932 version.
