The hilarious Spanish (Region 2) DVD cover

I was surfing amazon.co.uk looking up films unavailable in the US and stumbled across a link to Escapade in Japan. I wasn't looking for this film but was intrigued by the DVD's cover art, so clicked it on.

The DVD in question is from Spain (Region 2), and is in English without subtitles as well as dubbed in Spanish. On the cover the title is translated as "Escapada en Japon". But what made me laugh is the artwork.

First, Clint Eastwood's name is listed in large letters across the top, as though he were the star of the film instead of a bit player barely seen. The actual stars, Teresa Wright and Cameron Mitchell, are listed below Eastwood, in much smaller lettering.

But the real howl is the artwork itself. Dressed in a uniform of some sort, Eastwood fills up more than half the cover space, while behind him a gigantic explosion has been set off, with assorted palm trees, vehicles and other items apparently blowing up with it, and lots of tiny but busy-looking figures and objects scattered around at bottom. Needless to say, there's not a sign of the actual stars of the film, and of course the violent action depicted bears no relation to anything in the movie.

Obviously, the DVD was designed this way to lure unsuspecting buyers into thinking this is a typical Eastwood action movie, which it's anything but. People who know the film will understand this (and I'm sure will also be amused by this pathetic marketing attempt), but there must have been more than a few unsuspecting cutomers who bought the disc and have been trying to locate Clint, and all those explosions, in it ever since!

I didn't buy or see the DVD, so can't speak to its quality. It's the only version of this film I've seen listed on DVD anywhere. My only purpose here, aside from notifying any fan of the disc's existence, is to point out one of the funniest, most bizarre, and more amazingly dishonest (and desperate) DVD covers ever!

Yes, I suppose it has souvenir value.

"How 'bout it, punk? Are ya ready for an escapade? Well? Are ya -- punk?!"

I checked out that link, and sure enough, it's as bad/bizarre as you say it is. Way, WAY off the mark!! lol

To add to the hyperbole of the cover art, let me point out that it not only depicts a larger-than-life image of Clint Eastwood who, as we know, had a barely visible, momentary appearance in the film, but... it depicts him wearing a military hat festooned with what we call "scrambled eggs" in military jargon: those gold leaves and other sorts of embellishments found on the visor of the hats worn by ranking officers. This decoration on a military hat is generally reserved for officers of relatively high rank, such as a Navy Captain, an Air Force general, et al. Yet in the film, Eastwood was clearly not a high-ranking officer, he was merely piloting a search and rescue plane, and he certainly was NOT wearing such officer's hat festooned with said "scrambled eggs." lol

Well, thanks for posting this. You made my "chuckle" for the evening.

PS - check out the "Blackboard Jungle" board, as I got another chuckle out of your post on Vic and his soda bottle, and I posted a comment. All in good humor, of course. lol.

Yes, that uniform was inappropriate as well -- not just to Clint's character, but to the entire theme of the movie.

With Spain's banking system about to collapse, maybe the government can salvage its public finances by confiscating all existing copies of this DVD and putting them up for bid on ebay. Then, after they leave the Euro zone, they can adopt a new currency called an istuod...or, perhaps, simply el clint.

Totally agree that it is absolutely ridiculous. It is actually a cute/sweet movie. The VHS cover had pictures of the 2 little boys and it was a movie that you could watch with your kids. Besides that, they show Clint Eastwood on the DVD as a violent/scary looking warrior when his screen name was Dumbo.

I had forgotten all about this thread until I was notified of your post. Glad to know the DVD is still there and still with the same bizarre cover. Maybe it's worth buying just for that. Thanks for the refresher!
