Who gets the giant Spaceballs helmets?

On the American boat, some of the sailors wore regular-sized military helmets while others had huge ones. Was there some logic to who got which helmet?

After looking again, I guess it is the communications guys with the bigger helmets, as they needed room to wear headphones.

Those sailors are called "talkers" and are using the ships sound poweredphone system. The helmets are designed to fit over those large headphones.

They're wearing the U.S. Navy MK-2 Talker helmet.
