I just finished watching it on TCM. It is an awesome film! I think this is probably one of my favorites by Sidney Poitier.

I saw this movie when I was growing up - they showed it on Channel 9 or some local tv station - and it made such an impression on me I never, ever forgot it. I thought everyone gave such amazing performances - especially the mean boss guy, that character actor - and the bond that Poitier and Cassavetes had between them was unique and memorable. Years ago, when I first learned how to use the internet, I was able to locate a copy....some guy in Canada and you could tell it was taken right off of his local tv station lol. But it was wonderful to see it again, even in its blurry form. They simply must do the right thing and release this on dvd.

Yes, I saw it for the first time last night as part of a Sidney Poitier
tribute on TCM. Amazing little film. The opening credits, with that
amazing score, just grab you. Wonderful, touching, gritty film. Thank
GOD they shot it in black-and-white.

I have had some close black friends in my life and this movie both stirred and disturbed me on a deep emotional level. Poitier, Cassavetes and then especially Ruby Dee near the end really got to me. A very underrated movie!

I think it presents one of the most compelling Christ figures in the history of American film.

A largely unrecognized classic.
