Donzoko (?) what mean?

The title Donzoko flummoxes me. What is the meaning in English of the
Japanese(?) word? On Babelfish, Gorki's title translated from Russian
into Japanese is Lower the depth, somewhat literalish. Babelfish
translates the English Lower Depths into the Cyrillic, i.e. literally,
the low depths. Can any Japanese speaker give me a literal
translation of the word "Donzoko"? Is it possibly a word coined by
Akira Kurosawa himself? Such as Dodes'ka-den--an onomatopoeic sound
that a train makes as it travels over the tracks. His retarded
boy-san, Rokku-chan, makes this sound as he indomitably drives his
imaginary trolley through the slum.

In 1957 our family was strolling somewhere in Tokyo (the Ginza?) one
day and I spied slum denizens peacefully picking lice off each other
as they sat on a curbstone. It was captivating to my pre-teen Gaijin
eyes but our step-mom, Yaeko, a very petit bourgeoise from Sapporo,
hastily ushered us away as if to shield our eyes from the impropriety
of their grooming habits. To me, it was not offensive inasmuch as
they had nowhere else to "groom" themselves, not unlike the simian
species in the Ueno park zoo.

Kurosawa saw life whole and entire not unlike Zola and Gorki and all
artists who saw life au naturel, with all its uncouth properties.

Does anyone know the etymology of the work "Donzoko"?
