Alcohol: an excuse or a reason

I dont think their apology in the morning should've been enough.
Not to Champa, at least.

Indian cinemas use alcohol as an excuse waaay too much. They show it as though it takes away the agency from the wrong-doer, etc. (Often used in scenes where an imbibed woman will suddenly turn into the seducer. Even to this day and age .)

Well, you won't get a quarrel from me on this one.

But I liked the fact that Champa had the sense to ask, "Just where did you get this alcohol". And, heavy handed as it was, I liked the point that anger can be just as intoxicating as alcohol.

Actually the silver lining here is that Champa was quite a gutsy girl and kind of saves herself, so her forgiveness somehow is less uncomfortable than if she had been a kind of I-dont-know-what-to-do damsel in distress. The direction/choreography of her attach showed her KICKING them off her quite effectively. I quite liked that.

Yes, that question - and that it occurs to her before it occurs to the boss - shows her in a smarter light. That plus what she says about anger being intoxicating.

Fully agree. Quite a gutsy and smart lady. I like the female protagonist who is no damsel in distress. Especially in a film of this age.

They show it as though it takes away the agency from the wrong-doer,

But alcohol does just that. It is also in the West that a felony under alcohol influence will be judged less hard. Intoxication (toxic, sic!) is often a mitigating factor that decreases a prison or jail sentence.

The agency lies in the fact of imbibing the alcohol. But you cannot say that imbibing itself is already a felony because the culprit knows beforehand that induced intoxication lowers the inhibition ant thus facilitates the occurrence of a felony.

Anyhow, I had the impression that the rich merchant tricked them into imbibing alcohol. As far as I remember he invited them to tea.
