Question about the Bhajan

The song Ai Malik Tere Bande Hum ties this movie together, and with some searching, I was able to find the words, with English translation. The most complete translation I found was in a Hindu Hymnal for a US-based college Hinduism group.

But I notice the song is not listed in the posting of songs for the movie, so I wonder whether it was not composed for the movie, but might be an older, preexisting song which is just identified in people's minds with this movie.

Also, both the first time it is sung, and at the funeral, it is sung out of a book, suggesting to my mind at least, that it is supposed to be words from some sort of sacred text.

Can anyone enlighten me? What would that text be? How much of this was composed for this movie?

Thanks for your help.

It was written by Bharat Vyas, who the lyricist for this movie. The song was written for this movie. It's a Hindu hymn written for the movie.

A bit of trivia - Bharat Vyas's younger brother Brijmohan Vyas is one of the actors in the movie. He plays one of the six murders - the barber who tries to kill Shantaram.

Thanks for the information. Eight years is a little slow to get information by internet standards, but I do appreciate it.
