Pink Slips

Consider the ending:

they all surrender their careers and self respect to a pink slip of paper included with their paycheck. Seems despite their lack of electronic circuitry the ladies in research were willing to be treated as automatons none the less.

At least the ladies of Sterling, Cooper, Draper & Pryce had the pleasure of seeing Don during the day, the flesh and blood bastard that he is. It would take 100 Mike Cutler's to stand up next to Don.

I tell you what.

It was always tradition to terminate someone's employment in the fashion you describe. They were beginning to move on with their lives. I see nothing odd or unusual in this. To the contrary, it shows their strength.

What were they supposed to do, refuse to leave after they were laid off? I don't know if you've ever attempted to keep doing your job and getting paid after being laid off or fired, but generally it doesn't work.
