DVD is here!

"The Deadly Mantis" was released Sept. 11 as part of Universal's Sci-Fi Ultimate Collection, Vol. 2. Currently it's only available at Best Buy for $19.99, which is less than $4 a title. Vol. 1 eventually became widely available but why wait?

The four other titles are "Dr. Cyclops", "The Land Unknown", "Cult of the Cobra" and "The Leech Woman". All in great prints.

Really? Wow! Thanks for the heads up!

You're welcome! I only found it by chance at Best Buy the day after it was released -- I hadn't been in the place in months. Enjoy!

And by that same chance, I got to pick it up yesterday as well. Thanks again! I missed Vol. 1, I hear it's pricey now, cuz I rarely go to Best Buy.

Cheers!

I also hear Vol. 1 is unavailable now except as an expensive used or new set. Even though these two sets debuted at Best Buy, Vol. 1 did show up on other sites a few months afterward, but they certainly kept Vol. 2 quiet (even the Best Buy flyer didn't advertise it, though they did the first one -- which is how I found out about it).

Vol. 1 is even better than 2, with TARANTULA and THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN the top picks. But even THE MONOLITH MONSTERS, MONSTER ON THE CAMPUS and THE MOLE PEOPLE (which everyone hates, but I find fun, if dumb) are worth it. Maybe that set will be re-released one day.

It's already sold out. On another forum, people were saying they'd see guys buy 20 or 30 at a time, since the first volume sells for upwards of $150 now used.

What, are they starting college funds for their kids?

But I happened to have gone to two Best Buys this week, looking for something else, and noticed that in one store Vol. 2 was indeed sold out, and in the second, there were two copies left. It'll be interesting to see if this comes back either to BB or into other stores and sites, like Vol. 1, before disappearing altogether.

I suspect Universal, which is pretty bad about releasing their library, will hold back for a couple of years, then eventually make a grand re-release, maybe of both sets together: they know there's a demand. Anything for a buck.
