Not as good as Them!

Certainly not.Clearly The Deadly Mantis had budget limitations, but the never ending use of stock footage was atrocious.Made the movie look cheap and nasty. And the scenes with the Eskimos were awful.Just watched this movie for the first time ever-on Sept 14th 2010-and must admit I enjoyed it.But it isnt as good as Them!,even thought that movie had budgetary issues as well. But at least Them! had a decent script that made sense and drove the story forward.Mantis,on the other hand had a talky, rambling script that often made little sense. One thing I hated was the attack on the train was only mentioned, not shown-what a potentially great scene that could have been.Saves on the FX budget,I suppose. Also, didnt you just long to see the Mantis kick the @ss of one or two of those jet fighters?Or bring down an air liner? It would have been great to see an almighty battle with the Army as well.Like I said-reasonably enjoyable movie, but I wish it had been better.Remake potential?

I agree 'Them!' was a stronger film because for one thing it worked as a detective story. Of course, the poster art gave away the premise but even so, we watched the police and the FBI trying to work out what was actually happening and it worked like an episode of the X Files (a series that it probably inspired.) We did not actually see the ants until we were well into the film and they were effective enough to be shocking. The missing children gave us something to root for and the main characters were likeable. The Deadly Mantis threw all of that away. The only really suspenseful part was when the hero and heroine were at the base and the mantis attacked but it was soon over. I think the budget was soon exhausted. I am sure they intended a lot of scenes of the mantis destroying buildings and wrecking trains. They just had to cut corners. I think they probably got some funding from the government to promote home defence, hence all the radar stuff at the beginning and the bit about citizens watching the skies in their spare time. I suspect quite a bit of horse trading of this kind went on at the time.

Giant bugs are biologically impossible, of course. So this is more fantasy than Science Fiction. The mantis is effective but we see too much of it - especially early on. For real menace, small is scary. The little compys in Jurassic Park II were the scariest concept. The raptors were also scary. But the T Rex was more fun and emerged as a kind of hero. I was never really convinced by the mantis as I couldn't imagine it bothering about us unless it landed in the middle of Manhattan and scooped up people by the hundred. I'm sure that the original writer had that in mind. The hordes of fleeing Eskimos suggests that they intended it to feast on them too - like a real mantis breaking up an anthill. With a bigger budget, this film could have rocked.

As far as remakes are concerned, I think that it would have to be changed quite a bit. People nowadays are sophisticated enough to know that a giant mantis would be crushed under its own weight, would be unable to breathe and would never survive the Arctic cold. I would be more interested in a film based on "Heresies of the Huge God" by Brian Aldiss. Now that really is a monster!

wouldn't hold out hope that most people know what occurs re: square cube law,,,,,,, and sizes.
if it isn't funny enough have someone hit in the face with a fish. Since Thorne Smith likes it ...

I was thinking the same thing. People saying this is the best of the 'bug' movies..Only "Them!' is slightly better.. Not that it matters.. I could literally spend an entire weekend watching 50's SciFi movies. In fact, I think I have done that.

Them is much better that TDM - though I enjoy TDM.

Because: Them had many small but interesting characters that were very well written/acted and added a layer of human feeling to the normal simple cast of such films. One of the reasons THEM! has been written about positively in places like the New York Times while TDM has not. The NYT story on it was around 2007-8............

Not sure why this movie is regarded as terrible by so many. Meant to be entertaining, not Longfellow on celluloid.

Yes, not as good as THEM -- but it's still better than a 4.2!

^^^Agreed. Them! & Tarantula are among THE best of the giant bug movies of the 50s. The Deadly Mantis however, is also pretty good, if very talky in spots. I thought the giant mantis puppet was well designed and operated. You can tell it was a puppet of significant size, going by how good the miniature buildings and cars were designed as well. Not sure why so many people think it's such a bad movie.

I also didn't think it was Mystery Science Theater worthy bad. Then again, they also mocked This Island Earth, another movie that's highly regarded sci-fi.
