WASN'T THERE A MOVIE ALMOST EXACTLY LIKE THIS STARRING DARIN MACGAVIN? BUT WITH A DIFFERENT ENDING?

Indeed there was. It was called "Tribes", and starred McGavvin as the DI and Jan Michael-Vincent as a hippy draftee. Bit of a different tone in that one.

It came out in 1970 or 1971 and I believe that Jan Michael-Vincent deserted in the end.

I saw that one. It was horrible. It wasn't horrible in an entertaining way, just rather you would probably find yourself asking yourself halfway through " How much longer till this movie is over? ".
