Did they really use a dead dog in that scene in the earlier part of the film?

The versions I've seen seem to have a pretty distinct jump between the puppy when in the tank and thru to when it's twitching after the water has been drained, and then to when it's obviously alive, doing well, and being examined by Dr. Frankenstein. I wonder if they didn't kill one dog for the "floating in the tank" and "just drained" part, and use another one for the "alive and restored" part.
They may have just given the pup a sedative for a few scenes, then later when he revived they shot the "recovered" scenes. After a good cleaning and drying, he was fluffy for the next scene by the fireplace.
