Where was the house?

Not everybody lives down the street from huge drive-in screen. Where was this?

reply

Me thinks in Inglewood, Calif. -- the Century Drive-In either that or Gondwanaland.

What is the sound an imploding pimp makes?

I caught portions of this last night on TCM, what great film noir.
I did see the house shots and it seemed to be Westwood. I didn't see the shots of the drive in but there was a Drive In near Westwood and Pico near what is now Westside Pavillion.

I was thinking the same thing. Looks like West Los Angeles, parts of Brentwood look like this too. I LOVE that 56 Mercury Conv the lady drives at the beginning. Poor Barbara dents that gorgeous 51 Ford.

I wondered what that big blank structure was that loomed over the neighborhood... a movie screen, of course!

I'm thinking the house was in the Valley, given the house number, the "newness" of the house, and the "newness" of the street (in 1957). The address was 11170 which would put it somewhere between Vineland and Tujunga Aves. There was a drive-in theatre in that area, North of Magnolia, possibly where the North Hollywood Park is. There was also another located near the Burbank Airport. I have a city atlas from 1951 with a page showing the location of drive in theatres around Los Angeles. It doesn't give the theatre names or addresses, just shows approx. locations. The North Hollywood one may have been torn down to make room for the 170 and the Burbank one may have been torn down for airport expansion. The one in our neighborhood (Atwater Village) was razed to make room for the 5.

Wish I could upload a photo. I have a scan of the Drive In Theatres page.

Anyway, my guess is to look at streets in the 11100 blocks between Magnolia and Chandler, Victory Blvd. and San Fernando Road. I think there was a curve in the street the house was on... that might make the best candidates Welby Way and Archwood Place.

Raymond Burr's house did look more like a Brentwood kind of neighborhood.

Damn you're a good location detective.

Will miss seeing posts like this, when they close the Boards in two weeks...

AHA! I believe I found it!

Address: 11170 Fairbanks Way, Culver City. The theatre was the Studio Drive-In and was located at 5250 Sepulveda Blvd.It closed in 1993 and the screen came down in 1998. Although the street has matured since '47 all of the houses you can see in the film are still there.

I had been looking in the Valley because one synopsis of the film mentioned that the couple lived in the Valley. But you know Hollywood... they meant the Culver City Valley no doubt.

Thanks for the heads-up! As a former location manager (I still work sometimes), I love to see these actual locations. Google Maps has it, plain and clear. So , no more guessing from other posters in here(although some don't seem to be paying attention). I wonder if the current owners know that their home was in a movie?? I lived in a house off West Adams, in the mid-80s. They filmed the pilot for "thirtysomething" there. The subsequent series utilized another exterior for all of the other episodes (in Pasadena), but they copied the exact interior of the West Adams home.

A friend of mine lived in an apartment complex near Century City - I stayed with him a few times. One night I was watching the noir, "Tension"....and there it was! His apartment was even visible, and the interior sets copied the actual apartments accurately.

Funny how you insist that Witness to Murder isn't noir, but you're hanging the noir label on Tension.

reply

I don't hang labels.

Thanks for taking the trouble to follow me around, while you had the chance. What will you do without the Message Boards?

reply

Also, do you have any idea where the "Inspector's" house is?????????? Probably close to the studio.

reply

I think you are right. I lived in Culver City 1950 to 1973 and went to the Studio Drive In many times. I agree with you.

reply

Since the film was made out of Culver City, CA on Washington Blvd, it stands to reason they would go to the Studio Drive-In several miles away. Why would they drive to Gardena or Burbank or the Valley?

reply

It looks like Torrance, CA, and that could be 'The Roadium' (still there but they don't show movies anymore—it's a swapmeet.

"What do you want me to do, draw a picture? Spell it out!"

reply

Are you sure "The Roadium" is not in Gardena, California?

reply

It could very well be; the cities are adjacent. Maybe Crenshaw Blvd is the dividing line. I lived in Gardena when we used to see movies at the Roadium.

reply

My husband also saw movies at the Roadium as he is from Gardena....He's pretty sure it's in Gardena...The towns just seem to blend together anyway.....The strange thing is we don't remember seeing a drive-in in the movie! I was just reading the comments and found this...Am going to go back and watch the part where they drive into the driveway again and see if I see a screen.....

7 hrs. later....Went back and did see the screen....I guess neither my husband nor myself are very observant...

reply

Doesn't the neighborhood look like the Gardena area? We could see the Roadium from my friend's house on Spinning Ave., but the angle was different.

All this talk about drive-in movies has brought back some nice memories of going to the movies when I was a kid, It was so fun.

I haven't seen this film, lots of good detective work on here.

Usually if it's really the Valley(lived there for many years) you can see hills in the background or the mountains.

Culver City sounds about right.

reply

Thanks. We still haven't determined exactly where it is! :)
