Did seeing Shears finally snap Colonel Nicholson out of it.


Does he really get over his love of that bridge?

I think so. "What have I done?" I believe he fell on the plunger deliberately.

No doubt about it, he realized that these men were sent to destroy the Bridge, that his beloved British Army Corp deemed the Bridge an enemy asset. That he had collaborated with the enemy because of a self-delusion. After seeing his beloved Army humiliated with defeat and capture he went a bit insane, seeing Shears snapped him out of it.

I think it was seeing Joyce dead that triggered the switch in Nicholson, not Shears.
