Sophia's Acting

I always liked Sophia Loren, but she's unbelievably bad in this movie. As I'm sure everyone noticed, she basically shouts every line, seemingly mad at the entire world.

WTF????

The two lead actors also give horrendous performances.

Was this perhaps the director's fault? Is there any back story on this movie that might explain how truly awful it is?

I think when your opening scene is Her Right Royal HOTness Sophia Loren (and her Double-D blouse-bunnies) in clingy WET clothing, replete with ERECT NIPPLES, well, speaking for the male audience, I didn't hear ANYTHING until about an hour later, when she was singing in the cafe... LOL... ;')

Give her a break ... she was still studying English

I don't think the OP was referring to her fluency in English (or lack thereof). I think the OP was distressed by the way Phaedra (Loren) was constantly in a state of agitation, throwing fits, throwing objects at people, waving her arms, shouting, etc. etc.

Wet or dry, Loren is the best thing about this middling, but still entertaining, film. Ladd was a poor choice as the romantic lead.

The flip side of fear is understanding.

He did a good job in a thankless role. Per the trivia page, Cary Grant was the original choice, when he dropped out Robert Mitchum was the next choice. Marlon Brando and Clark Gable were also considered. So, Ladd was the third option at best.

I'm gay, I don't care about Loren's wet clothes or tits, I just got tired of her screeching voice and terrible overacting.
