The First 35 Minutes. . .

were sufficiently awful for me to give up on this film altogether! Ye gods, what could have possessed anyone to have anything to do with this piece of dreck? I was embarrassed for Gable and de Carlo, and if I'd stayed around long enough for Poitier, doubtless I'd have been embarrassed for him as well!

Virtually unwatchable - those who are offended by GONE WITH THE WIND's racism will find far more to be offended by here.

meh. Your taste is too refined for polite discussion.

You should have stuck around, the end is a lot better than the beginning. I was thinking the same thing in the early scenes. The end of the movie is really about Sidney Poitier's character. The moral choices he makes are interesting to discuss. It's nothing great, but it does get better.

The first time I watched this (alone), I nearly dozed off. About three months later, I watched it with a lady who'd NEVER seen a Clark Gable flick and NEVER seen any pre-"Love of Ivy" Poitier films. Her enthusiasm for BAND was contagious; not a classic, but serviceable. Oh, and the lady has now seen GONE WITH THE WIND< BOOM TOWN, THE HUCKSTERS and COMMAND DECISION. Plus about five Poiter movies. I'm schoolin' her...

.......The first thirty five minutes are the only part of the movie resembling the book. The rest was written as an unsuccessful attempt to restart Clark Gable's career........They did get the who overripe slave Gothic thing down over a decade before Mandingo.

I liked it but it helps to not compare it to Gone With the Wind while watching. 6/10.
