Do Pat and Shirley Smooch?

In her autobio, Barbara Eden claims to have given Pat Boone his 1st screen kiss in the service comedy All Hands on Deck circa 1959. Didn't Pat lock lips with Shirley Jones two years earlier? Anybody remember for sure?

reply

Haven't seen the film lately, but I don't think they did. I believe Pat had his first on-screen kiss in "Journey to the Center of the Earth," which came along two years after this film.

Thanks, I'm sure April Love will be aired somewhere in the next month (TCM?).

reply

Hmmm, I just had a quick look at the TCM schedule and don't see a showing listed for April, unfortunately. For some reason that channel hasn't aired the film in years, though it used to be in regular rotation on their schedule.

But woohoo, good news---at last a widescreen blu-ray of "April Love" is being released. I've already put in my pre-order---I should receive it around the middle of the month. I look forward to hearing Shirley Jones' commentary track on this new transfer; should be interesting.

April Love, a remake of Home in Indiana, is a feel-good movie, without an edge, the kind they don't make anymore. There are no villains here, only the legal system that nearly snares young Pat.

Not quite. They never actually "lock lips". When the horse, Tugfire, recovers from having been accidentally left out in the rain, Shirley joyfully plants a kiss on Pat's cheek. Later, on the Ferris wheel they almost kiss but the ride ends, plus the crowd interferes. Such a lovely movie, really. It's been a favorite of mine since I first saw it as a youngster.
