A Childhood Favorite

They used to show this movie all the time in the 70's on Creature Features in Chicago. That was a week-end horror movie program. The Amazing Colossal Man was my favorite movie back then. I was really little, but I remember feeling so sorry for him! He was so lonely and sad. Then there were the great scenes when he was walking around Las Vegas, right? I remember him holding a big ladies shoe from a sign. This is one of the most memorable movies from my childhood.

With all due respect, I think you're memory is a little fuzzy. Creature Features (WGN Channel 9 in Chicago) never showed this movie. The AIP pictures were broadcast almost exclusively on WFLD Channel 32, usually on their Saturday and Sunday afternoon Sci-Fi Cinema series. I watched this several times in my youth (1960sā€“70s) on WFLD. It may also have been shown on Screaming Yellow Theater with Svengoolie and later Son of Svengoolie, but never on Creature Features (which I also watched religiously nearly every week). Creature Features showed mostly the Universal Shock Theater and Son of Shock movie packages, as well as a few non-Universal flicks like The Beast with Five Fingers, The Mask of Fu Manchu, The Undying Monster, etc.

I will, however, agree that it is a sentimental favorite, and I really don't understand the low rating here on IMDb. Up until the climactic monster-on-the-loose rampage the movie plays things pretty serious and sincere, and actually tries to portray the mental agony that Col. Manning and his fiance were going through, as opposed to the juvenile, schlocky treatment other typical ā€™50s monster movies would have given this subject. Though the effects suffer from budgetary restraints, I think overall they're pretty well thought out and cleverly realized. I always liked the miniature camel and elephant, and when I finally visited Las Vegas as an adult one of the first things I had to see was the Pioneer casino that Manning ripped the sign from during the climax. Ah, memories!

I'm sure you are right that my memory is a little fuzzy. I was probably just a toddler then. It does show you what an impact this movie had on me. My older brothers used to watch all of those horror-movie shows and I just remember the name Creature Features. One of them had a very distinctive piano theme song. I do still watch Svengoolie now though, every Saturday night! We also used to watch those Charlie Chan movies every Sunday afternoon I think, and wrestling on channel 26, I think. They used to always show commercials for a Ford dealership and the Fords would revolve around, I remember the Gran Torino. Those were the days. BJ and Dirty Dragon. . .

Yeah, used to watch wrestling on Ch. 26 too! And who could forget those Bert Weinman Ford Commercials with dramatic old-school pitchman Lynn Burton (who also did ads on WGN for APCOA auto painting)? "3535 North on Ashland Avenue."
