What happened to older brother?
Does anyone know what happened to the older brother who gave his brothers and sisters away. I know at the end of the movie he went to work at the logging camp, but then what happened to him?

sharethe oldest boy says he is going to work at the logging camp and will not continue with school. his brother asks him if he will sell their house and he replies, "not right away". it can be assumed that he remains at the logging camp until he is old enough to return home to resume the family business of boat building which was an important industry in the Pacific Northwest requiring significant skills and training which he received from his father. of course, there is nothing in the ending which indicates this assumption but that would be the best possibility considering what we know from the film.
an excellent film with a wonderful cast and a truly sad but realistic story.
"only one food for the rest of my life? That's easy, cherry-flavored Pez. No question about it."
This is definitely a tear jerker, based on fact according to the IMDB. I wish I knew more about it. But while boat building is important in the northwest, it takes place in Wisconsin. Boat building would have been just as important.
shareI wanted to know more about him and what happened to the kids. I wish there was a sequel.
Keep my name off your lips and I'll keep my fist off your face.
The writer for this movie, Dale Eunson - the real life son of the real life Robbie - wrote a great book about his own childhood growing up in Montana. The book is "Up on the Rim". Robbie moved to Montana with his family when he was 54. Before that in Wisconsin he'd had a livery stable and was sheriff.

Thanks for the link. I just found it myself after watching the film. Quite a fascinating piece of American history.
Also, to see what happened to Dale (author), the son of Robert (grandson of the character played by Cameron Mitchell), please follow the link from the Writers section of this film. Dale Eunson is Robert's son and wrote this story with his wife. Despite continuing tragedy in the family, Dale Eunson lived until 2002 and died at the ripe young age of 97. Not bad...
Looks like he had a successful career as an author and screenwriter.

Thanks for the link, even if the article is horribly written.
shareI thought what happened to the one brother to be so sad, the one who got sick with diptheria. The look of terror on his face when the doctor walks away after looking down his throat was disturbing, and he may have passed the germ on to his father. And then you don't see where he goes, only his begging the oldest brother to let him stay with him and Robbie screams at him to get going.
shareThe4 first time I saw it, I thought the oldest boy went off to die! Later on, I caught the dialogue about him going to work at a logging camp. Whew! Whatever, I wish all of them well.
