Casting strange?

Cary Grant was supposed to be Italian? And Deborah Kerr was supposed to be from Boston? WTF?

And the grandmother appeared to be living in the south of France. I thought she was Italian, but she, her gardener, and Cary seemed to speak French. Yes, WTF?

They were in the south of France. Close to Nice - which is quite a mix of both Italy and France. People there speak both language with some English as well. Take a look at a map - French Rivera/south of France - next to Monaco - next to Italy, all very close together. I've been on that train ride several times and have heard French, Italian and English all along the way.

The grandmother lived in Villefranche-sur-Mer, formerly Villafranca Marittima, which is just minutes from Nice, formerly Nizza. That whole area of the French Riviera used to be a part of the Italian Riviera until 1860, when France annexed the County of Nice in exchange for France's help in uniting Italy.
