Question regarding the end. SPOILERS

*********Spoiler alert*********

In the end when the Captain looks at the passengers in the big boat, we can clearly see some of the people he had thrown overboard (opera singer for sure). Is this his guilt playing tricks on him or did they actually got saved earlier?!

I'm guessing it can be both, but if this is based on a true story maybe someone has some insight.

Peace.

I saw this movie for the first time recently. I'm sure what the captain was seeing was a result of his conscience. He knew his decisions were a matter of life and death literally and perhaps for a moment he doubted what he had done.
Perhaps he wished that these people had been rescued after all and his conscience could rest. Just thinking.

From the soft focus, I believe it was the Captain's conscience causing him to see those he threw overboard. There is little chance between their injuries, the storm and hypothermia from being in the open sea that any of them would have survived.

WOW what a film. I just finished watching it too. The film is a fictionalized account of an actual event which occurred in 1841. In reality it wasn't a luxury liner - it was a ship of Scottish and Irish immigrants. Basically the "captain' of the lifeboat saved the crewmembers and sent the many immigrants to drown. He was tried and convicted but his sentence was 6 months. Remember this was during the potato famine years of the nineteenth century and the Irish were hated. I believe it was considered 'no great loss' In answer to the question - no one was picked up other than those in the lifeboat. I believe seeing the castoff people on the rescuing ship was supposed to indicate the Capt. conscience.

I disagree. I take things literally.

I believe the reason for the blurriness had to do with his stress, his wound and for his being at sea for as long as was.

I'm pleased that the people we thought had died, were saved.

It means he did the right thing after all.

If they were all picked up he wouldn't have been tried for murder.

reply

True. Plus, in the condition they were in they wouldn't be casually hanging around on deck catching rays and enjoying the view.
