A great western only topped by Red River

This might be one of the ten most under-appreciated films ever. It can stand up to multiple viewings and never be weak. The cast is superb all through with the two leads Ford and Heflin both riveting, especially the scenes of just the 2 of them. One of four great westerns starring Glen Ford between 1956 and '58 ("The Fastest Gun Alive", "Jubal" and "Cowboy").

I agree this is an under appreciated film that is always worth watching. And a top 25 western in my opinion.

FYI "Once upon a time in the west" and "the good the bad and the ugly" are my 2 favorite westerns. I put 3:10 in the 2nd tier category with contemporaries like Rio Bravo and Randolph Scott's best westerns in the 50s.

So yeah a great movie.

Enjoyable knockoff of High Noon. But, the very end is rather ludicrous. From aboard a speeding train, Heflin waves bye-bye to his family as he takes Ford to justice. Bye-bye is right! How can Heflin leave his family behind with the remnants of Ford's gang around more than eager to exact revenge on his defenseless wife and kids?

It's a fair point but, as I recall, Wade didn't threaten Dan's wife and sons at all during all his attempts to turn Dan.

Therefore I was thinking there's maybe some sense of honour at play here.

Ford (and for that matter, Heflin) has never been appreciated by film historians. What a pity.
