'Well, hello there ALMOST a doctor!'

Boy I would love to hear the feminist movement see this movie and comment on it. The way the army dude puts that woman doctor in her place is priceless. Ah, the good ole days.

"Good ole days..." Whatta you, twelve? Do you always tell women who are smarter than you to shut up? Who was the last one you put "in their place"? Grow up and come into the new century...

SHE referred to HERSELF as "almost a doctor"! Where do you think he got that teasing remark?! Obviously, he found her attractive and interesting, as well as surprising since she's so fierce about what she thinks.

Obviously, you don't have a clue about the period you're commenting on because a woman wouldn't always be taken as seriously. Check out "It Came from Beneath the Sea", in which Faith Domergue has to be "hardnosed" with the military guys and fellow scientists. Also note how she uses feminine wiles to catch one of the patients offguard, getting him to talk about the giant tentacles that destroyed his boat.

The Fifties and Sixties were a time in which Want Ad pages were divided into "Men's Jobs" and "Ladies' Jobs" (NOT "Women's"). I know because I used to work at a newspaper office in which I did a column titled "Looking Back", which called for going through lots of microfiche. I was stunned to see that division, especially because some of the ones for men were jobs women commonly do today. Women's Lib/Feminism didn't really hit full stride till into the mid- to late Sixties. Yes, there had been Suffragettes and Rosie the Riveter; but, women still tended to be limited to waitresses, nurses and secretaries.

So, his treatment of that young woman wouldn't have been unusual for that time period, and it's foolish to "get riled up" about it. Check out Stephen Boyd's response to Raquel Welch in "Fantastic Voyage"; he says something like, "This is no place for a woman" although Cora is intelligent, serving as a scientist's respected, trusted assistant.

By the way: My father was a fan of Bill Cosby's comedy routines, and we often would give them as presents. So, I grew up listening to this very funny man. In one of the routines, he speaks about being in a hospital and trying to get an intern's attention. He calls out, "Hey, you~almost a doctor!" *giggle* I have a feeling that Cosby must be a fan of "20 Million Miles to Earth"!

I was just thinking about that Bill Cosby routine. It's from "Tonsils" from his album "Wonderfulness".

I remember Cosby saying it from way back, but I only saw the full version of 20 million miles to earth just recently and didn't make the connection until then.

It may very well be that Bill Cosby was a fan of Harryhausen movies. In other comic routines, he talks about his love for the old monster movies and suspense / horror radio shows. I'll bet when movies like It Came from Beneath the Sea and 20 Million Miles to Earth came out, Cosby was probably right there in the theater with everybody else munching popcorn and enjoying every bit of it.

Wonder if anybody's every interviewed Cosby regarding this?

Don't forget that women could be school teachers. One of the few jobs suitable for women. Taking care of kids. They should have been honored to be part of this honored profession.

Also, good post from MystMoonstruck.

I'm kinda surprised about the "Men's Jobs / Ladies' Jobs" sections in the papers, but then again I'm not too surprised.

HA HA HA HA! I knew i would rile up a feminist somewhere! Thanks for the update, "ALMOST A FEMINIST!"

She was a sweetheart! And now the Listerine.

Also is the way she presented herself, saying something similar to "I am a doctor, well, almost a doctor". So he just picked up on that. I see no gender innuendo here. Regards.

reply

Yes but i can't help but believe that had she NOT been a woman, he would have chosen his words more carefully......

reply

Put her in her place? At the hospital, he should've beat the living crap out of that miserable bitch!

reply

Ah, the good ole days indeed!

reply

Actually, she says she is "almost a doctor" because she has one year of her studies to complete. It had nothing to do with her gender.

Nice essay, but I'm afraid Hammerfanatic46 is quite right. It's definitely not a gender issue. We already know from the scene when her character is first introduced that she doesn't consider herself a doctor since she has a year left in medical school.
As far as the women position in movies of that era, it's true they were far from equal to men but there has never been an issue on them practicing a scientific profession.
In "This planet earth" 2 years before this one, the female protagonist was a well known scientist, just one of the two that were close on solving the energy issue. The same goes for the female character in "Angry red planet" and so many other sci-fi flicks.

If you look at the most MODERN Science Fiction film to date Star Trek Into Darkness you will see an obligatory underwear scene with actress Alice Eve. Not that I have any problem with it, but even in a politically correct film, we all know the REAL reason women are cast in these type "sagas", even today!
