Bad Continuity, Season 1

Am watching Season 1 on DVD and noticed the bad inter-episode continuity. Audiences must have been very forgiving in the late 1950s. In "It's a Woman's World" (5 Dec 57), Amos can't read, but in "Grampa and the Driver's License" (2 Jan 58) he learns well enough to pass a driver's test and obtain his license, but in subsequent episodes he's back to being unable to read and needs to be driven into town because he can't drive.

During the same season, Grandpa signs an egg contract with an "x." This adds to the illiteracy characterization. I wonder if continuity errors are often caused by the editing of original network runs for syndication purposes. TV reruns have left me saying...huh?...from time to time. What did I miss? An edited scene. I believe today's PC world is the reason for some clipped audio or missing shots on reruns.
